Gunner Harry Isaac was a prisoner of war in Hong Kong. On September 25th 1942, along with nearly 1850 other P.O.W's, he was shipped over to the Lisbon Maru, a Japanese transport ship, from the P.O.W. camp at Shamshuipo. Two days later it sailed for Japan. On board, as well as the P.O.W.'s, were 780 Japanese soldiers who were returning to Japan for repatriation.
All went well until the Lisbon Maru was 120 miles south east of Shanghai. At 7am on Ist October, she was hit by a single torpedo fired by the American submarine 'Grouper'. The Lisbon Maru shuddered to a halt.
During the day the Japanese troops were taken off onto a Japanese destroyer and another troopship, but the P.O.W.'s were left battened down in the holds. They stayed there for 26 hours, then broke out as the boat began to settle. Japanese shipping in the area made no attempt to help. In fact they were seen to be shooting at men in the water. Losing hope of rescue, most of the prisoners started swimming towards nearby Islands, but eventually the Japanese started picking them up. By the end of the day, however, 825 men had died either on board the ship or in the waters round it.
Harry's body was never found, and his name is listed on the Sai Wan Memorial in Hong Kong.
